Product Details:
Glass is produced from a mixture of silica-sand, lime and soda. It is still not known about man's first efforts to make glass. It is believed that the Egyptians were among the first to use glass in their art and culture. As far back as 2500 BC, amulets and solid glass beads were made in Mesopotamia. About 1000 years later, the Egyptians also began making glass. The first glass vessels were made during the reign of Tuthmosis I in the New Kingdom. This innovation came to Egyptians probably due to their expansion in the Middle East.
Blown glass is one of the famous kinds of glass that has developed in different eras. Arabs have developed many tools to be used in this craft such as the holding rod of the vessel’s bottom during glass–blowing process. Later, the Blown glass has been used to creat new geometric and plant shapes.
Creation of Blown Glass:
Blown glass vessels are created by sticking a piece of molten glass onto one end of a blowpipe and through the other end introducing pressurized air into the pipe. The expanding bubble of glass may be
- Either introduced into a mold and further inflated until it fills the whole matrix. After the glass is cooled down, the mold could be removed.
- Or shaped with an instrument, while turning the blowpipe slowly to prevent deformation of the object due to gravity.
Decorations are, then, added by pinching the hot glass, adding handles or adding strands of differently colored glass. Embellishments could also be added after the object is cooled down. Writing or images might be incised. Paint or enamel might be applied. These changes convert simple straight patterns into more complex ones.
