Alabaster industry is one of the unique and earliest Egyptian handcrafts that developed and sustained through the sequential generations since ancient Egyptians (4000 BC). In a mythical sense, marble calcite was believed to have solar connections!!

Today, Alabaster represents the major source of income for many artisans working mainly in the west of Luxor (south of Egypt). Yellow Limestone, Black Granite, Basalt, Marble and the national Marmar are the most prominent materials used in this craft. They are brought from the mountainous surrounding the region. “Qurna Village“ is located at the west bank of Luxor where most artisans live. There, they live beside the temples and ancient civilization symbols and produce Pharaonic antiques that fascinate visitors from different worldwide nations.

Alabaster & Marmar:

Alabaster is a porous stone that could be dyed into any color or shade. Therefore, during formation, the stone needs to be fully immersed in various pigmentary solutions and heated to a specific temperature. The purest alabaster is a snow-white material of fine uniform grain, but it is often associated with an oxide of iron, which produces brown clouding and veining in the stone.

The softness of Alabaster supports its formation technique and enables it to be carved readily into rich forms. The finer kinds of Alabaster are employed largely as an ornamental stone, especially for ecclesiastical decoration and for the rails of staircases and halls. Early vessels were of simple but elegant shape, often with flat board rims.

Oriental Alabaster (known as Marmar) is distinguished for its bright crystal look, solidness and clarity. It is extensively found in south Egypt specifically in Luxor and Aswan. The most famous Marmar carved statue was made for King Ramsis II. It’s located in Luxor museum.
